The holiday season is a wonderful time for family, friends, and celebration. However, the winter months can have a detrimental impact on one’s physical and mental well-being, even amidst festivities.
What measures can be taken to maintain health during this season?
Drink plenty of water.
While hot cocoa and cider may be appealing during the winter season, it is important to prioritize water as your primary beverage. Hot drinks can offer warmth, but it is necessary to balance this with a daily intake of at least 8 cups of water. Drinking a glass of water with and in-between meals can promote hydration, support overall health , and enhance your body’s ability to combat germs.
Eat Healthy Foods and Practice Portion Control.
It’s no secret that holiday meals can be high in calories and unhealthy fats. However, it's important to have healthy practices and make smart food choices. Eat slowly and mindfully. Fill your plate with plenty of vegetables and lean proteins whenever possible. Balance out your favorite holiday treats with healthy options. Don't skip meals in preparation for a big holiday feast, as this can lead to overeating.
Sleep enough.
To maintain optimal sleep habits, stick to your typical sleep schedule even when celebrating or traveling. Be mindful of excessive caffeine, alcohol, daytime napping, and large meals before bedtime, as these can impede a good night’s sleep.
Dress warmly.
Remember headwear that fully covers your ears, wear mittens rather than gloves and pull on well-insulated socks when dressing for the weather. Instead of wearing one big coat, dress in several layers of loose, warm clothing. This will better protect you against wind, snow and rain. If your clothes become wet, change them as soon as possible.
Keep up with your exercise routines.
During the winter months, cold air can make it challenging to maintain a regular fitness routine. Nevertheless, it is important to prioritize physical activity, as it can have a profound impact on both mental and physical health. If outdoor activities are not an option, consider exploring indoor exercise alternatives. Utilizing digital fitness resources, such as workout apps and online exercise programs, can be a convenient and effective way to stay active. Moreover, dressing in layer that can be easily removed can help regulate body temperature during exercise.
Keep the germs away.
Maintain hand hygiene. This is one of the most effective methods to prevent illness and transmission of common winter illnesses, such as the common cold. Germs accumulate through nearly everything you do or touch, so frequent hand washing is essential.
Have a great holiday season and stay healthy for the new year!
