The top three reasons people cite for being willing to change careers, according to a recent survey by FlexJobs, might surprise you. 56% say they would do it for a better work-life balance, 50% for higher pay, and 49% say that they would consider switching for a more meaningful or fulfilling career. That means that two of the top three reasons cited have nothing to do with money.
More Money or Better Balance?
It's more than likely that if you're considering changing careers one or more of the 3 reasons above are a factor, and purely statistically it's likely that the desire for personal growth and a more fulfilling private life are more important than purely financial considerations to you.
Now obviously, money is important. Without a baseline of financial comfort we can't pursue the lives we'd like to at the level we desire. But once that baseline is reached, more and more people are realizing that a higher salary doesn't matter if they are having a miserable experience going to work each day. The ability to focus on the people and things in your life that bring you joy, things like your friends and family, your hobbies and interests, are far more important than a little bit of extra spending money to your overall happiness.
So the question is, are you looking for one of those things, and if you are, is it time to change careers?
How The Job Shop Can Help
Now that you have thought about whether you want to change your career and why you might desire to do so, it's time to start thinking about how you do so. That Job Shop can help you with that. We're a free service for candidates, and can help you take the next step in your career path.
Assess Your Skills
The Job Shop treats every candidate as an individual, as unique, because you are. This means that we take a look at the unique skills and experience that make up your career history and then figure out where those skills might make you an excellent fit. Because of this, after working with us you should have a better idea of what skills you have are transferrable, which are in demand and in what industries, and how best to go about listing those skills.
Identify Your Goals
What kind of company do you want to work for? Is a remote or hybrid work set up important to you? What about the mission or values of the company? When you talk to one of the recruiters at The Job Shop we will help you identify what is important to you in your career search, so that we can get you into the perfect role! If you're not sure what you want, that's okay too. We can get you into a variety of temp jobs that will help you identify what you like and don't like about individual roles.
Expand Your Network
One of the benefits of temp work is that you get to meet people who might otherwise have never crossed your path. This means that your network will expand and begin to include people from a variety of industries in a variety of positions. This benefits you long after you've stopped working with us. Remember that the old maxim often holds true. To a certain extent, it's not what you know, it's who you know.
Target Your Resume
A targeted resume focusing on your ideal position is a huge help when it comes to landing that position. Recruiters at The Job Shop look at resumes all day long. We can help you ensure that your skills, talents, and experience are presented in the most positive light to help you land the position you want, and remember, we do this for free!
Prepping For Interviews
Being able to tell your story and express yourself in a clear and coherent fashion that expresses how you would be an asset to the company you are interviewing with is hugely important to actually landing the job, and that's why we coach every candidate we send out to interview on best practices, from the wardrobe you should wear to the questions they're likely to ask.
