Our use of computers and mobile devices has increased over the past few years, and medical professionals and researchers have studied how this can have an effect on our eyes.

Three major issues can be caused by increase screen usage:

  • Eye strain- blurred vision, difficulty focusing, and eye soreness.

  • Dry Eye- Because we are not blinking as often as we normally do when we use a screen, this can mean less tear distribution which can dry the eye, causing itchiness, redness and irritation.  Your eyes may become itchy, red and irritated.

  • Computer Vision Syndrome- You may experience neck and shoulder pain, blurred vision, difficulty between focusing on objects that are near and far, and headaches.

Here are a few things we can do to take care of our eyes while working:

Make sure the room is well lit. You should use curtains or blinds to reduce glare on your computer screen. Your computer screen should be 20-28 inches from your eyes. The center of the screen should be 4-5 inches below eye level.

Do eye exercises.

  • Keep your head facing straight ahead. No move your eyes back and forth, up and down. Repeat this several times.

  • Cover your eyes with your hands. Open and close your eyes. This can help reset your vision.

  • Blink slowly 15-20 times. This could help with eye dryness.

  • Roll your eyes back and forth to reduce eye strain and stretch the eye muscles.

Eat foods that support eye health

  • Whole foods with nutritional value are your best bet!

  • Vitamin A foods like eggs, dairy, or spinach

  • Vitamin C foods like kale, broccoli, and peppers

See an eye doctor regularly.

  • Regular check ups help you keep up to date with your eye health.

Get a good night’s sleep!

  • You need a good night’s sleep so your eyes have the chance to heal.

As we continue to use screens in our daily lives- even in ordering food at the mall, and choosing seats at the movies, we should find ways to take care of our vision, so we can always have healthy eyesight.
