stairs to a big idea

Author: Jojo Varona

Job hunting, especially when changing careers or if you have been searching for a while can be stressful.  But you can still be a strong applicant for the opportunities that are available, by finding out (and learning) what new skills are in demand and applying your existing skills to a new industry .

While any career change can be daunting, one of the top jobhunting tips involves reskilling. Taking  time to take online courses to build your personal toolkit would be highly beneficial. It's no longer about just about finding out what careers are in demand, it's about what skills are in demand.

Here are some of the skills that companies are looking for now more than ever:

Familiarity with a wide variety of technologies

Companies are looking for people who are comfortable with technology so they can be effective  workers. Most workers are familiar with Microsoft Office, but learning  any new software can be beneficial. LinkedIn Learning® and modules on Zoom® and Skype® are great — and often free — places to learn.

Ability to work with data

As many industries are rapidly evolving – this results in an increased demand for employees who can understand new trends and changing customer needs. Because of this shift, knowing how to read and analyze data could give you an advantage in the job market. The demand for data analysts is robust and will continue growing in 2024 and beyond. As businesses across industries increasingly rely on data-driven insights to inform decision-making and drive strategic initiatives, data analysts will continue to be indispensable. To prepare yourself for data-related opportunities, check out the many online data science courses, including some offered by top universities.

Proficiency in a foreign language

The business world is becoming increasingly globalized, creating a demand for those who are fluent in multiple languages. Employers tend to seek out professionals who can fluently communicate with clients in both international and domestic markets. Possessing these language skills is likely to increase your earning potential and overall career advancement. Employees with skills in Chinese, Spanish and French are in the highest demand among U.S. companies. Companies such as Rosetta Stone, Babel, Duolingo and other apps are a great way to start learning a foreign language.

Public speaking

Communicating your ideas to a group in a clear, compelling way is a great example of public speaking. As you advance in the professional world, you may be asked or even required to speak publicly about your work. Presenting yourself in the best way possible and learning how to be a better public speaker is a great way to improve your performance skills in almost any career.
