What To Do When You Lose Your Paycheck

Author: Tammy Doss

There could be many reasons why a paycheck might be lost or missing. I’ve heard a lot of reasons over the last 25 years why people have lost, misplaced or not received their paycheck. Don’t fret the Job Shop is here to help.

Here are some of the more interesting reasons I've heard (paraphrased):

“While enjoying my after work beverage at my favorite hangout someone stole my paycheck that was in my purse that I left on the table as I was taking my Karaoke turn”

“I spilled my extra hot, vente, triple shot ,decaf, double vanilla pump, non-fat, no foam, double blended, soy latte on my paycheck and I can no longer read it and the bank won’t accept it”

And my personal favorite...

“My best friend, the Dog, ate my paycheck”

More common reasons for not being able to deposit your check are that you simply misplaced it or it was not delivered to you by the United States Postal Service. If the USPS did not deliver your check, consider whether one of the following might be true.

  • Holidays can delay delivery, so if it is the holiday season give it an extra day or two and hopefully it will show up in the mail.

  • Your Address is incomplete on your paycheck and is missing your suite or apartment number.

  • You have moved and forgot to notify us of your new address.

  • You did not indicate on your timecard whether you wanted your paycheck mailed or held. If you don’t check the box to mail your check we automatically hold your paycheck and make every effort to contact you and find out if you want it mailed and to what address.

Every effort is made to get you paid as soon as possible! We realize the RENT may be due!

No Need to Panic

Give us a little time to see if your paycheck has been presented to our bank to be cashed or deposited. It’s happened before that a friend or spouse deposited your check without your knowledge. Worst case someone took your check without your knowledge and tried to cash or deposit it.

As soon as we have determined the check is outstanding the replacement process will begin.

We will place a stop payment on your original check. So if you have reported your check lost or missing do not try to deposit or cash it if you end up finding it later. Please return the item to The Job Shop office located at 461 Second Street #C332, San Francisco, CA 94107.

Next we will re-issue you a replacement paycheck and notify you when it is ready for pick-up in our San Francisco office or mail it to you. (Your Choice)

Things to remember

The Job Shop has three ways of getting your paycheck to you.

  1. If you want your check mailed indicate this option on your timecard and your paycheck will be placed in the mail for delivery by 5:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

  2. You have the option of picking up your paycheck in the San Francisco Office after 12:00 noon on Fridays.

  3. Direct deposit is the third option and may be available for long term temporary assignments. Your recruiter can confirm if you qualify for this option.

Please note that in all cases the “Holiday Schedule” for delivery may differ and we will notify you accordingly.

Finally, the best thing you can do is deposit or cash your paycheck right away. This leaves less chance of loss, misplacement, and hassle. If however you do have a paycheck mishap please do not hesitate to contact The Job Shop immediately so we can help you resolve the issue.
