During the hiring and interviewing process, there’s a lot of things that are out of your control. But something that is in your control, is what you wear to the job interview. While most of the interview is about what’s on the inside (personality, skills, goals, etc), it’s important to understand that first impressions are just as crucial. I’m going to go over a few ways on how to dress for the company you’re applying for, how to understand the company’s dress code, and what to avoid wearing.
Casual. If the company you’re interviewing for has a more casual environment, like a retail store, restaurant, or a trendy marketing agency, you might find them wearing jeans and a sweater around the office. So, you might fit in with wearing a casual outfit. But, you haven’t landed the job yet, and making a first impression is still important. So, opt for a mesh between casual and formal. Whether it’s a nice pair of jeans (no holes), a button up or blouse, and closed toed shoes, putting a little more “formal” into your outfit is always a good idea.
Formal. Or maybe the company you’re interviewing with is business formal, like a law firm or something similar, so setting yourself apart from the rest of the office could be difficult. Certain work environments will emphasize appearance, so there’s still always a way to stand out. If the people in the office is wearing slacks with a button up shirt, or a skirt with a blouse, you could consider wearing slacks with a suit jacket, or a dress with a blazer and appropriate heels.
How to know the company’s dress code. You’ll want to do this first, prior to picking out an outfit. Maybe you’re uncomfortable asking the hiring manager what the dress code is, or maybe it just hasn’t been brought up yet, regardless, the internet is your best friend. Be sure to do research on the company. Not only will it stand out in your interview, it’ll help you find the vibe of how to dress. Look up the company on social media andhow do the employees dress in pictures, or check out how the company presents themselves on their website. Of course it’s professional, but how does it come off? Casual, spunky, semi-formal, business? These tips will help you narrow down how the company applies their dress code.
What to avoid wearing. Finally, I have listed a few clothing/ non clothing items that should be avoided, regardless of how casual or formal the company is.
Ripped jeans
Baggy clothing
Low cut tops
Crop tops
